Why We Dance

Before I was born, my mother claimed there was nothing that got me to settle down.  I was raring to go and get out of her womb as soon as possible.  From those small (and I mean small) beginnings, my feet have always wanted to move.  Even as I type this, my feet are tapping to the music in my headphones and I'm thinking about the dancing I did last night and the dancing I will do tonight and the night after that and the night after that.  I'm a dancer, it's in my blood and nothing can take that out of me.  But what is it about the movement of dancing that makes it so much more powerful than our everyday walking?  Why do we dance?

Shakespeare once wrote "When you do dance, I wish you/A wave o' th' sea, that you might ever do/Nothing but that."

If I could live by those words I would. Because I dance.

When I say, "I dance," I am not talking about just dancing. I breathe dancing, it's what keeps a smile on my face, it's where I release negative energy and share positive energy. It's the place I run to when I'm sad, happy, confused, or meditative. I can get lost in dancing and can be found when I dance.

I dance because sometimes words just aren't enough! - Linda P. Fitzgerald

There's something about sharing a dance with someone that lets you learn things about them that a conversation never would. It speaks to their creativity, the way your bodies connect, how well they listen to the music... The connection that dancers share on the floor is impossible to achieve by greeting someone with a handshake. With no words, that dance is an equivalent of a handshake.

Words can not express why I dance. So, I dance- to express the words I can not speak. - Adara K.

When watching someone dance, you can see the emotion inside. You can begin to feel things that you never knew could be said and even in a first meeting, you've really met them. Dance is a way of communication.

I dance because it makes my entire body smile. - Halli Chamberlain

There have been times where I have left the dance floor close to tears due to something someone has said off to the side because the dance floor is never a place to cry. Instead, it's a place of joy and to forget the sadness. To some, dance is where they go when they need to be cheered up, is their happy place.

When I dance I become part of the music and the music becomes part of me. - Unknown

There has always been something magical about music that connects all of us.  We sing in the shower, we tap our feet to the rhythm, we belt it out in the car on road trips, and we find the songs that remind us of loved ones past and present.  But there is always something about music that moves each and everyone of us, whether it is physically or emotionally.  Mankind has always been with music, be it the beats of drums or sound through pipes.  It is in our veins and for some, it is expressed through the movement.

When I hear music (sometimes in my head) my feet and body start moving ... it's like magic. - Bernadette Njoku

If I hear a song, my first response is "Can I dance to it?"  I love music that moves me and love to become part of the story that the different melodies tell.

There are times where dancing is merely a collaboration, or exercise.  But what's good for the body is good for the soul.

Whether it's ballet or ballroom, clogging or jazz, dance is great for helping people of all ages and physical abilities get and stay in shape. There's even chair dancing for people with physical limitations. - AARP.org

So if you don't dance yet, what's stopping you?

I absolutely LOVE to dance. I love feeling the energy that is life pulse through me as I do it. I took dance for three years (from about 8 to 11), but was forced to quit after I discovered my twisted right leg prevented me from doing the advanced moves. However, I never stopped dancing! I pick up new moves wherever I can and incorporate it into my own style. People say I am a beautiful and/or amazing dancer, but I just do what the music tells me to!

When I hear certain music I want to dance too. It is as if the music gives the energy. I can be tired but music can wake me up. Music and dancing are all around us in nature. We hear the birds singing and many animals have courting dances too.

I am not a musical person but to me music is as much a part of life as breathing, and dancing is too.

A good hub and comgratulations on the nomination for a hub nugget.

I like to dance, and since as you said, dance conveys who we are, I love to freely move to the music. But I love much more to watch people dancing. Several of my friends are professional dancers. I love to just watch them practice. There is definitely a link formed between the dancer and the audience. Looking at dancers performing makes me feel good!

Great hub congrats! One of my favorite quotes - "And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music." -- Friedrich Nietzsche

Hummingbird - there's actual a form of partner dancing which focuses on connection to it's smallest level that it does become complete breathing in unison: Micro Blues :) Your comment reminded me of that.

Gramon - If you come to the bay area, come out dancing! We don't mind people watching!

Tori - That's a fantastic quote! Thanks for posting.

I love Dancing I have danced for 32 years this year and been married for forty years . I always say you can spend money on dancing or you can spend money on heart bypass which one would you rather spend money on .

When I was young I wanted to be a ballet dancer I use to go to the libary and get out big stacks of books . That showed steps go home and practice them . When I was 10 my mom got me into lessons I was slow to learn and clumbsy all of my friends that danced did resitals not me .

I was so disappointed I wanted to be a dancer a few years ago I realized something while having one of my conversations with God I have had all my life .

God had granted me my wish he had let me become a dancer I had ballroomed danced for 32 years . I wasn't the beautiful ballet dancer I wanted to be but at a class reunion I can out dance any ot=f the other kids who went to the prom

I didn't go no one asked me to go I was a wall flower but because I ballroom dance I have made many a prom dress most of them had only one prom dress I have had lots of them I can make a formal in a little over a day if I want one .

I have sewed for over 50 years I am 63 and still dancing loving every minute of it .

dollslikeus - that's a fantastic story of dance. My mother is always sad she didn't push me towards dancing more when I was younger. But I kept finding it on my own. :) I hope to still be dancing when I get to be your age!

I haven't danced in sooo long! I was going to major in it but it didn't (and still doesn't) seem logical. I am sure you know what i mean. But I am inspired to channel those talents to ballroom. I did ballet and modern, so thanks for inspiring!

elissa - I'm not sure how I would've done with a dance major, but keeping it as a hobby instead of a full-time job definitely makes it fulfilling and never stressful! I am pleased to have inspired you!

I was feeling so down that this lovely Hub almost made me cry. My favourite quote is "dance isn't what I do, it's what I am" - and that's how vital dance is to me.

I love love LOVE this hub!

It explains everything about how I feel about dancing, its my escape. When I can't convey a message through speech, I dance instead and let the audience take it how ever they see it, even if they don't truely understand.

Dancing is all about emotion and only the best kinds of dance are when you dig deep and use your emotion to create, convey and perform a dance!

I am a big fan of this page!
